Kenya Flag
Kenya’s flag is a Pan-African tricolor with a very specific centerpiece: a Maasai shield and two crossed spears. That shield is your fastest tell.
How to identify the Kenya flag
- Bands from top to bottom: black, red, green, with thin white edges (fimbriation) separating the red from black and green.
- Center emblem: a red Maasai shield with white and black markings, crossed by two white spears.
- Do not stop at “black-red-green” alone — Malawi, Libya’s older design memory, and others use related palettes without this shield.
Colors
Top black, middle red, bottom green. White appears only as thin separators and on the shield/spears artwork. The shield itself mixes red, black, and white.

- Malawi – Black, red, green with a red rising sun in the black band — no shield or spears.
- South Sudan – Black, red, green with white fimbriation plus a blue triangle and gold star at the hoist — no Maasai shield.

Kenya flag FAQ
What is the emblem on the Kenya flag?
A Maasai shield with two crossed spears. If you see that centerpiece on black–red–green bands, pick Kenya.
How do I separate Kenya from Eswatini quickly?
Kenya is black/red/green horizontal with a red shield. Eswatini is mostly red between blue edges with a large black-and-white shield.
Are the white lines part of Kenya’s colors?
Yes as fimbriation — thin white edges that keep red from touching black and green. They are a useful secondary clue.
